PICKET FENCES: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot of this series of off-beat dramas that often focuses on social issues as it chronicles the lives of Rome, Wisconsin, residents, including town Sheriff Jimmy Brock; his wife Dr. Jill Brock; their three children, Kimberly, Matthew, and Zachary; and his two deputies, Kenny Lacos and Maxine Stewart. In this episode, a schoolteacher who was playing the Tin Man in the town's production of "The Wizard of Oz" is murdered backstage. The teacher, Phil Banks, is thought to have had a heart attack, but the coroner, Carter Pike, discovers that he was injected with a lethal dose of nicotine. Sheriff Jimmy Brock and his two deputy sheriffs, Maxine and Kenny, find revealing photographs of a high school student named Debbie in Banks's desk drawer. Debbie admits to having had an affair with Banks and tells the Sheriff that her father, Michael Kayton, knew about their relationship since had to get his permission to have an abortion. Being a suspect in the case, Kayton takes a polygraph test and insists that he did not murder Banks. When the results reveal that he has lied, the officers believe they have found the murderer. However, the night before, Banks's wife, Marcia, confidentially confessed to her family doctor, Dr. Jill Brock, that she murdered her husband. Meanwhile, the Brocks' daughter, Kimberly, is excited to learn that the singing Contrition Sisters have arrived in Rome -- until she discovers what the performers are really like. Also, the Brocks' youngest son, Zachary, finds that he cannot use the urinal at school and wets his pants during recess. Their eldest son, Matthew, comes to the rescue when other children start to make fun of Zachary. Includes a promo for "Picket Fences." Commercials deleted.
