LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN {DAVID JOHANSEN, ROBERT CULP, KEN AULETTA, DR. JOYCE BROTHERS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk shows hosted by Conan O'Brien. On this program, the guests include singer/actor David Johansen, actor Robert Culp, and best-selling author Ken Auletta. Highlights include: Conan O'Brien's monologue mentions Michael Jordan's pursuit of a professional baseball career and Tonya Harding's new routine on the ice during a figure-skating competition; O'Brien and his sidekick Andy Richter take to the streets of New York City to comfort the people during the cold spell which has hit the Northeast; the first guest is David Johansen, who talks about his alter-ego Buster Poindexter and the fun he's had playing the part for the last ten years, what it was like being the lead singer of the 1970's punk rock band the New York Dolls, an incident which occurred on stage during a performance in England, changing his singing style as he got older, and performing shows in the Catskills; Johansen then performs the old New York Dolls' song, "Personality Crisis"; the next guest is supposed to be Robert Culp, but since he hasn't arrived at the studio yet, O'Brien must use his emergency guest; however, the emergency guest solution doesn't work out the way it is supposed to, which leads O'Brien to turn to his last alternative, Dr. Joyce Brothers; Culp finally arrives and discusses the following topics: doing live television in O'Brien's studio in the 1950s; his role as President of the United States in the film "The Pelican Brief"; who, if any, of the past presidents he molded the performance after; getting ready for the "I Spy" reunion show to air; and the controversy and publicity that surrounded "I Spy" when it first started in the 1960s; the last guest is Ken Auletta, who talks about what the media superhighway means in terms of viewing choices for the public, the dangers that the superhighway could create that people may not be aware of, how the networks as well as the community will be affected by the technology, and the possible response of the networks in order to keep a steady flow of viewers. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.
