CBS SPECIAL: THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW REMEMBERED (TV)
Summary
A special tribute, hosted by Charles Kuralt from "the Petrie's living room," honoring the innovative comedy series, "The Dick Van Dyke Show." During this program, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Carl Reiner, Sheldon Leonard, Ann Guilbert, and Larry Mathews Mazzeo recall some of their fondest memories of the show and discuss the following topics, among others: the creation of "The Dick Van Dyke Show"; why the series did not sell right away; Van Dyke's unique talents; Mary Tyler Moore's audition for the show; the chemistry between Van Dyke and Moore; the basis for the writers' room on "The Alan Brady Show"; who the show's characters were modeled after; and why Carl Reiner did not show his face for much of the series.
In addition, this special includes clips from the following famous scenes, among others: the three different openings for the show; Reiner's pilot of the original version of the show, "The Head of the Family"; Laura saying "Oh, Rob" and crying in various episodes; Laura and Rob dancing; Rob's proposal to Laura; Rob, Laura, Sally, and Buddy at an auction; Laura's "tush" in various programs; Sally attempting to hook a husband in various programs; scenes with Alan Brady in which his face is not shown; scenes in which Alan tells Mel to "shut-up"; and Mel wearing a toupee. Clips from the following classic episodes are also featured: Rob and Laura waiting for Laura to go into labor ("Where Did I Come From?"), Laura getting her foot stuck in the bathtub water faucet ("Never Bathe on Saturday"), Laura and Rob's wedding ("The Attempted Marriage"), Laura's curiosity getting the better of her ("The Curious Thing About Women"), Laura's feelings about Rob the first time they met ("Stacey Petrie"), Richie's questions about his origins ("Where Did I Come From?"), the Petries' destructive game of charades with the Halpers ("All About Eavesdropping"), Rob's concern that he and Laura brought the wrong baby home from the hospital ("That's My Boy"), Rob's stint as the foreman of a jury ("One Angry Man"), Laura accidentally telling the nation that Alan wears a toupee ("Coast to Coast Big Mouth"), and Rob accidentally becoming hypnotized ("My Husband Is Not Drunk"). Includes public service announcements. Commercials deleted.
