NBC NEWS: DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION 1968 {TAPE 3 OF 4} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:35682. Tape three of four. Live coverage from the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, anchored by Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. The tape begins abruptly, with Iowa Governor Harold Hughes on the rostrum, speaking in favor of presidential nominee Eugene McCarthy, listing his achievements, his plans for the future, and comparing him at times to people such as John F. Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Afterward, Brinkley details a riotous peace demonstration occurring downtown at Michigan and Balbo avenues. Aline Saarinen, on tape, reports on the story. She notes that police are taking billy clubs to protesters, many of whom are shouting "sig heil." Additionally, Gabe Pressman reports on the "phalanx" of police merging on the demonstrators. Meanwhile, back in the convention hall, Georgia delegate Julian Bond seconds the nomination of McCarthy. Afterward, Huntley further discusses the ongoing riot downtown near the Hilton Hotel.

Next, Sander Vanocur, on the convention floor, speaks with California delegation chairman Jesse Unruh about security at the convention, whether any walkouts will occur, and who the California delegation is supporting. Then, Huntley discusses a report from Robert Hagar that the vice presidential considerations having been narrowed to three men: Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine, Sargent Shriver, U.S. ambassador to Paris, and Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma. Meanwhile, the polling continues as San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto nominates Hubert Humphrey, running through his list of progressive accomplishments. Before Alioto speaks, Huntley details Don Oliver's report that reporter Mike Wallace of CBS had been being detained by police, then released after twenty minutes. After Alioto's speech, John Chancellor attempts to speak with Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley who keeps vigorously applauding, ignoring the eager reporter. Then, Jack Perkins, on tape, reports on the latest installment in the ongoing "war" along Michigan and Balbo avenues, as protesters -- chanting "The whole world's watching!" -- and the police clash. Saarinen adds further reports on the ongoing riot, noting that police have removed the bayonets from their rifles.

Eventually, the scene quiets down a bit. Showing a highlight from earlier in the evening (seen on T:35681) within the amphitheater, Mayor Carl Stokes from Cleveland concludes a seconding speech on behalf of Humphrey's presidential nomination. Afterward, former North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford offers another seconding speech for Humphrey. The tape cuts off abruptly. Includes commercials. Continues on T:35684.
