NBC NEWS: DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION 1968 {TAPE 2 OF 4} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:35681. Tape two of four. Live coverage from the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, anchored by Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. The program opens on the floor with reporter Frank McGee and Colorado delegate Peter Williams discussing the ongoing protests in Chicago and -- in lieu of a denunciation earlier in the day from the rostrum -- the right of youths to have long hair and sideburns and wear "dirty clothes." Then, New Jersey delegate Elizabeth Wenk discusses whether she will leave the Democratic party and attend a "fourth party" conference if Eugene McCarthy is not nominated for president. Then, Brinkley discusses the discontent among some toward Hubert Humphrey's "inevitable" nomination. Next, on the rostrum, writer/producer Dore Schary and actors Paul Newman and Ralph Bellamy offer a memorial to the late United Nations ambassador and Democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson. The trio recite many of Stevenson's writings before convention-goers stand in a brief moment of tribute. Then, Brinkley details how the ongoing riot taking place near the Hilton Hotel -- as well as a bus strike -- has caused service problems within the hotel and prevented employees from reporting for work.

Next, Floyd Kalber, just off the convention floor, reports on what he has seen during his quick tour of the Humphrey, McCarthy, and George McGovern convention headquarters, speculating whether any floor demonstrations may occur. Then, John Chancellor, on the floor, asks Governor John Connally of Texas to speculate about potential vice presidential nominees. Then, Tom Pettit reports from the guest entrance on the outer perimeter of the International Amphitheatre where a group of unidentified people are jamming the hallway in a pro-Humphrey demonstration. Then, Chancellor asks Illinois Representative Roman C. Pucinski about potential vice presidential nominees, particularly regarding the chances of Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine. Next, on tape, Aline Saarinen reports on protesters forming in downtown Chicago's Grant Park and beginning to march toward the Amphitheatre, despite the release of tear gas. Saarinen tells of her own reactions to experiencing the tear gas. Later, Edwin Newman, on the floor, speaks with Reverend Richard Newhouse about the walkout he is organizing due to the impending nomination of Humphrey.

Then, Chancellor, on the floor, speaks with Reverend Channing Phillips, soon to be nominated as a "favorite son" presidential candidate from Washington D.C., the first African-American ever nominated. After some talk between Huntley and Brinkley, Chancellor, still on the floor, details Humphrey signs having just been passed out indiscriminately amongst the convention-goers, quite possibly marking a breaking of rules. Then, Brinkley reports on Chairman Carl Albert having just stood on the rostrum where he noted the "irrevocable" decision of Lyndon B. Johnson to not run for another presidential term. Then, Newman, on the floor, speaks with New York delegate William J. vanden Heuvel, who was set to nominate Johnson until being asked to change his plan. Then, Sander Vanocur, on the floor, speaks with Maine Governor Kenneth M. Curtis who is promoting Muskie for the vice presidency. Next, the roll call begins, starting with Alabama yielding to North Carolina, with North Carolina delegate I.T. Valentine, Jr. nominating "favorite son" Governor Daniel K. Moore. Brinkley reports that fighting has broken out between police and protesters, and that Humphrey was among those suffering the effects of tear gas. Douglas Kiker then reports on an earlier clash -- shown on film -- between demonstrators and police in Grant Park. Afterward, Chancellor reports on a melee on the floor, with Newman and New York delegate Alex Rosenberg in the midst of it. Meanwhile, Vanocur, on the floor, attempts to speak with John Glenn on Senator Edward M. Kennedy's failed presidential bid. The tape cuts off abruptly. Includes commercials. Continues on T:35683.
