NBC NEWS: DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION 1968 {TAPE 1 OF 4} (TV)

Summary

Tape one of four. Live coverage from the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, anchored by Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. The tape begins abruptly with Jack Perkins reporting on the ongoing "war" along Michigan and Balbo avenues, as protesters -- chanting "The whole world's watching!" -- and the police clash. Then, Aline Saarinen adds further reports on the ongoing riot. Eventually, the scene quiets down a bit. Back at the International Amphitheatre, Mayor Carl Stokes from Cleveland concludes a seconding speech on behalf of Hubert Humphrey's presidential nomination. Afterward, former Governor Terry Sanford from North Carolina offers another seconding speech for Humphrey. Next, a roll call for nominations continues before Colorado delegate Robert Maytag rises to call for Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley to end the "police state terror" being perpetrated outside. Then, Maytag is interviewed by Sander Vanocur on the floor detailing why he made his somewhat controversial statement. Next, Frank McGee on the floor interviews incoming national committeeman from Oregon, Blaine Whipple, who airs some grievances against Daley and Humphrey. Next, Senator Abraham Ribicoff from Connecticut nominates George McGovern for president, inciting the crowd and infuriating a fist-shaking Daley when he says "with George McGovern as president of the United States, we wouldn't have to have gestapo tactics in the streets of Chicago." Next, Brinkley questions the identity of men in the aisles of the convention floor that have been following NBC crews and listening to their conversations. Then, Vanocur reports from the floor with some updates on the people who have been following him. Then, Floyd Kalber reports on a Eugene McCarthy caucus gathered to protest the activities going on inside and outside the convention center. Back on the floor, McGee speaks with Ohio senate nominee John J. Gilligan on whether the Democratic party can recover from the turmoil at this year's convention. The tape cuts off abruptly. Includes commercials. Continues on T:35682.
