TOMORROW COAST TO COAST {JAMES BROWN, AL SHARPTON, MUHAMMAD ALI} {EXCERPT} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night topical interview programs hosted by Tom Snyder, with Hollywood reports from Rona Barrett. On this show, Snyder is joined by "Godfather of Soul" James Brown, boxer Muhammad Ali, activist the Rev. Al Sharpton, rocker John Cougar, and Hollywood actress Shelley Winters. Brown and Ali presumably appear to discuss the potential social unrest of black youth in American urban areas stemming from recent social and economic developments. Snyder is visibly angered, however, when Ali admits that he knows nothing of the show's topic and agreed to appear on the program only for the free plane ticket and New York City hotel room. The Rev. Al Sharpton, of the National Youth Movement, joins the panel and comments on the need for black youth to be inspired and to have positive role models. Brown takes umbrage when Snyder refers to some young people as "hopeless." Sharpton advises Snyder that people shouldn't be so concerned with a "long, hot summer" as with the conditions that provoke such outrage. Next, Rona Barrett reports from Hollywood on network television industry news. Indiana-bred rock singer John Cougar then performs "Ain't Even Done with the Night" and comments on his allegiance to small town life, how he landed a recording contract, and why he agreed to use the stage name "Cougar" rather than his family name, "Mellencamp." Snyder and Winters then discuss how she went from sex symbol to serious actress; how today's sex symbols are newsanchors rather than actors; what implements she used to augment and support her sizable bosom early in her career; and her assertion that although film star Marilyn Monroe was exceptionally intelligent she played "sex bomb" roles for too long. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
