ER {E.R.}: BLIZZARD (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this episode, during a blizzard, the doctors and nurses enjoy a slow morning of office chair soccer and snowball fights, until a thirty-two-vehicle pile-up on the Kennedy Expressway results in more than fifty victims all at once. Highlights of the ensuing pandemonium include the following: a man arrives with third-degree burns; a terrified little girl, found in the snow with no identification, is lullabied by a nurse; a man calmly walks in, carrying his severed finger in a plastic bag; a victim arrives with a car cigarette lighter embedded in his chest; Dr. Benton and the new attending E.R. physician, Dr. Hicks, work to reattach a patient's severed leg; a woman arriving for her injured husband is assumed to be a crash victim and mistakenly sedated; Ross is deeply moved by the loss of a patient; "Bob," an immigrant from Poland doing odd jobs at the hospital, suddenly reveals herself to be a cardiovascular surgeon when a patient suffers an aortic rupture and no surgeon is available to perform the complicated procedure that will save his life; Dr. Greene guides a man through a home baby delivery via speaker phone while simultaneously operating on another patient; and throughout the day, Dr. Ross and Nurse Hathaway try to hide their feelings of anger toward each other.
