Summary
A highly visual, comic interpretation of "Peter and the Wolf," Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic fairy tale in which musical instruments represent the various characters. This version, performed by The Chamber Orchestra of Europe as conducted by Claudio Abbado, uses live action, "Spitting Image" puppets, and a heightened theatrical setting to realize the music. As narrated by pop singer Sting, who appears in puppet form, the story concerns a human named Peter who captures the wolf in the woods behind his grandfather's house; rescues the wolf from three hunters (depicted as life-sized Marx Brothers puppets); takes the wolf to the circus; experiences a "haunting" at his grandfather's house; and meets the great classical composers at a surreal banquet where he is given a flute. Musical numbers include "The March: An Introduction," "Overture on Hebrew Themes: A Haunting," and "The Classical Symphony: Peter's Discovery."
