CRIME STORY:PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

Feature-length pilot for this serialized police drama -- set for the initial episodes in Chicago, then in Las Vegas, during the early 1960s -- which traces the intersecting lives of three men: Lt. Mike Torello, the hard-boiled, hair-triggered leader of the city's Major Crime Unit; Ray Luca, a ruthlessly ambitious gangster; and David Abrams, a liberal attorney with conflicting loyalties. In this episode, Torello is enraged to find that the son of an old family friend is connected to a crew responsible for a string of violent robberies. As the story begins, Luca's dimwitted henchman, Paulie, fouls up the getaway plan during a restaurant holdup and brings the heat down on his boss, who enlists Johnny O'Donnell, a spirited young punk, to plan his next burglary. A decent kid from a good family, the thrill-seeking O'Donnell uses his college-smarts to plan an elaborate museum heist. With Luca's connections, the job goes off without a hitch -- until Luca offers to fence the stolen goods. Slick and treacherous, Luca slithers his way into the company of local kingpin Phil Bartoli and flashes the spoils of O'Donnell's heist to guarantee himself a spot in the Outfit's hierarchy. Locked out of his only shot at the big time, O'Donnell retaliates by robbing one of Bartoli's jewelry stores. Too self-assured to realize that his life is now in jeopardy, O'Donnell ignores Torello's warnings and continues his downward spiral into lawlessness and thievery. Luca, meanwhile, tries to win over public defender Abrams, whose father was once a notorious mobster. Commercials deleted.
