NBA FINALS, 1987: GAME 4 {BOSTON CELTICS VS. LOS ANGELES LAKERS} (TV)

Summary

This program contains live coverage of the fourth game of the 1987 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. Dick Stockton and Tom Heinsohn call the action from Boston Garden, while Brent Musburger provides commentary. Musburger begins the program with a review of the series so far (the Lakers lead two games to one), and then interviews Lakers coach Pat Riley about his expectations for the fourth game. The Lakers win the tip-off, but it takes nearly two minutes for them to sink the first bucket. At the end of the first quarter, the Celtics take the lead, 29-22. In the second quarter, a fight breaks out between the players when James Worthy takes a tumble under the basket. Play continues and the Celtics end the half with an eight-point advantage, 55-47. The half-time segment focuses on Julius "Dr. J" Erving, formerly of the 76ers, who offers his opinion on the game and discusses his plans for the future. Additionally, Musburger conducts an interview with newly appointed NCAA Executive Director Dick Schultz on the subject of players who leave college prematurely to join a professional club. Newscaster Charlie Rose then breaks in with a news bulletin. The third quarter begins; with just under eight minutes left on the clock, the Celtics lead, 70-55. As the fourth quarter winds down, the Celtics begin to lose their lead. The final minute becomes a battle of buzzer beaters. With 58 seconds left on the clock, the Celtics have a one-point advantage, 103-102. At 00:29, the Lakers push ahead, 104-103. Larry Bird makes a three-pointer at 00:12 to put the Celtics back, 106-104; at 00:08 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sinks one of two free throws to pull the Lakers to within a point,105-106; and with two seconds remaining, Magic Johnson comes through with the game-winning shot and the Lakers win 107-106. The program concludes with an interview with Magic Johnson. Includes commercials.
