NBA FINALS, 1970: GAME 7 {NEW YORK KNICKS VS. LOS ANGELES LAKERS} (TV)
Summary
This program contains live coverage of the seventh game of the 1970 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers. Chris Schenkel calls the action from Madison Square Garden in New York, while Jack Twyman and Howard Cosell provide commentary. In this decisive game of the series, Willis Reed and the Knicks are out to beat Wilt "the Stilt" Chamberlain and the Lakers and win their first NBA title. The program begins with Cosell interviewing Knicks coach Red Holzman about the status of injured superstar and team captain Reed. The crowd at the Garden roars when Reed is introduced as the surprise starter at center. Barely able to walk, let alone run, Reed scores the first two buckets and the Knicks race ahead. The Knicks dominate the remainder of the first half, which ends 69-42. Halftime coverage includes interviews with the following subjects: NBA Commissioner Walter Kennedy, who reflects on the dramatic playoff series which has culminated in this final game; Bob Lanier, the year's first draft choice, who evaluates Reed's performance; and Irving Mitchell Felt, chairman of the Knicks, who speculates on his team's unprecedented winning season. The Knicks maintain their lead in the third quarter. With four minutes left on the clock, they lead by twenty-five points, 85-60. As the fourth quarter starts, the Knicks are ahead, 94-69. Led by the high-scoring performances of Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Dick Barnett, Dave DeBusschere, and Bill Bradley, the Knicks go on to crush the Lakers 113-99 and capture their first NBA title. Howard Cosell hosts the post-game wrap-up. The silver-tongued sportscaster is repeatedly drenched in champagne as he talks to Knick players about their victory. Coverage concludes with an interview with the injured star Willis Reed, who is named MVP of the finals. Includes commercials.
