NBA FINALS, 1980: GAME 6 {PHILADELPHIA 76ERS VS. LOS ANGELES LAKERS} (TV)
Summary
This program contains coverage of Game Six of the 1980 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers. Brent Musburger calls the action from the Spectrum in Philadelphia, while Bill Russell and Rod Hundley provide commentary. The program begins with Musburger chronicling how Lakers star center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was injured in the previous game; filling in tonight for Abdul-Jabbar is rookie guard Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The 76ers win the tip-off, but the two teams are evenly matched during the first half, which ends tied at sixty. The half-time segment features Darryl Dawkins of the 76ers, known as "Chocolate Thunder," presenting clips of his career while a voice-over reads Rudyard Kipling's poem "If." Next, Julius "Dr. J" Erving of the 76ers is interviewed about his team's strategy for the second half. The Lakers go on a 14-0 run to start the third quarter and lead 74-60 with nine minutes left. As the fourth quarter begins, the Lakers maintain their lead, 83-93. Led by Earvin "Magic" Johnson, whose forty-two-point game clinches him the Finals MVP award, the Lakers go on to win the game, 123-107, and with it the 1980 NBA title. After the game, NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien presents the Lakers with the championship trophy; Rick Barry conducts locker room interviews with several of the players; and Musburger talks to Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Includes commercials and promos.
