CARMEN ON ICE {KATARINA WITT, BRIAN BOITANO, BRIAN ORSER} (TV)
Summary
In this special, filmed on location in Seville, East German Olympic gold-medal singles figure skater Katarina Witt stars in the title role of a unique on-ice adaptation of Georges Bizet's 1875 opera. American Olympic champion Brian Boitano and Olympic skating star Brian Orser portray the rivals for the affection of the fickle Gypsy, Carmen. During the program, each of the skaters displays his or her talents in solo dances and in duets. In the story, Carmen, the most beautiful girl in Seville, parades her beauty before the young men in town. The only man who does not seem to take notice is a soldier named Don Jose. At the same time, Carmen angers the townswomen who find her excessive flirtatiousness repulsive. A fight eventually ensues which is later stopped by a high-ranking officer who desires Carmen for himself. When Carmen refuses his advances, the powerful officer orders Don Jose to arrest her. Carmen, however, manages to use her charms to get the innocent sergeant to release her from her bonds and immediately escapes and flees. As a result, Don Jose is stripped of his stripes and is imprisoned. After serving his sentence, he at once returns to Carmen. Soon after, however, Carmen loses interest in him and replaces the loyal Don Jose in her affections with a good-looking matador, Escamillo. Wanting to know what the future holds in store for her, Carmen uses magic to look forward in time and is horrified to see that her actions will lead her to her own death.
