MIAMI VICE: BACK IN THE WORLD (TV)
Summary
One in this series of police dramas concerning Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, undercover detectives for the Miami vice squad. In this episode, Crockett gets a visit from an old friend from Vietnam. Stone was a combat reporter, who, in a flashback to Saigon in 1975, shows a young Crockett that he has discovered heroin being smuggled out of Vietnam in the bodybags of dead American soldiers. The man Stone assumed responsible was an almost mythical figure known only as "the Sergeant," thought to be the major heroin connection in Vietnam, whose identity or existence was never disclosed. Now, 10 years later, Stone reveals that he is finally closing in on the Sergeant, who he believes is living in the U.S., having sat on the heroin for all these years to allow its value to increase. Crockett jumps into the investigation, but Tubbs is suspicious of Stone's motivations. Matters take a bizarre turn when Crockett and Stone are attacked with mortar shells in the marina by an unseen Vietnamese man. Later, when Crockett takes Stone to see Capt. Real Estate, a retired officer whom Stone has been trying to reach for information about the Sergeant, the journalist suddenly comes unglued, appearing strung-out and irrational and claiming he made up the entire heroin story -- though Crockett knows otherwise. Stone takes off with Crockett's car and Crockett and Tubbs pursue. The trail leads them to Stone's hostile wife, who gives them an earful about her husband's drug and money problems; an exotic woman named Dakotah with a connection to the Sergeant; and finally to a remote island in the Keys where Stone and the Sergeant play out a dangerous game of blackmail. Commercials deleted.
