STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE: BABEL (TV)
Summary
One in a series of science fiction programs about a twenty-fourth-century space station, Deep Space Nine. In this episode, crewmembers are imperiled when a mysterious epidemic contaminates the station with aphasia, a dysfunction of the brain that renders its victims incapable of clearly expressing themselves. O'Brien becomes the first casualty of the disease when he accidentally detonates a device that had been planted on the station eighteen years earlier by the Bajoran underground. The aphasia soon spreads via the station's food supply, leaving Dr. Bashir to treat an increasing number of patients who can speak only gibberish. Before becoming infected himself, Cmdr. Sisko places Major Kira in charge of finding the Bajoran who created the disease. Although the responsible party is no longer alive, Kira locates a brilliant but indifferent Bajoran doctor named Surmak Ren, who may have an antidote. As a reluctant Surmak races time to find the antidote, Kira too falls prey to the illness and Quark and Odo are left in command of the station. Commercials deleted. This program is closed-captioned.
