GOOD MORNING, MISS TOLIVER (TV)
Summary
This documentary, winner of the George Foster Peabody
Broadcasting Award, is a portrait of math teacher Kay
Toliver and her students at middle school P.S. 72/East
Harlem Tech in New York City. The charismatic Toliver,
shown teaching her class "Mathematics and
Communication Arts," uses highly inventive, innovative
teaching techniques in order to integrate mathematics
with life experience, history and the language arts.
Eschewing rote computational formulas or texts, Toliver
supports and develops creativity and individual problem
solving approaches in her students. Interview subjects
for the program include students, who comment on the
energy and excitement of Miss Toliver's class, the
thrill of learning and the motivational vision of a
better future she instills in them; and parents, who
comment on the clever ways she involves them in their
children's education. This program is closed-captioned.
