IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT: SANCTUARY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of police dramas set in a Mississippi town. In this episode, Gillespie and Tibbs are charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive alien when they attempt to help a political prisoner from El Salvador receive a proper hearing. Ramon Salazar, who has escaped from a prison work crew, is given sanctuary in a monastery by Gillespie's good friend, Father Demarco. The monks will not allow the police to enter the monastery, and Sheriff McComb, who has juristiction in the county, asks Gillespie to convince his friend to turn in the prisoner. Gillespie, and later Tibbs, are allowed access to Salazar with the understanding that they will not take him against his will. The priest believes that the laws that put Salazar in jail are unjust and feels that his inevitable deportation would deliver him into the hands of the Salvadoran death squads. Gillespie and Tibbs attempt to convince Salazar that they will be able to arrange a hearing to grant him protected status as a political refugee if he surrenders to the authorities, but he refuses. Ultimately, his refusal leads to tragic consequences, with serious repercussions for Gillespie and Tibbs. Commercials deleted.
