HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: GOLDEN CHILD (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas presented by Hallmark. This original opera by Paul Engle and Philip Bezanson is set during the gold rush of 1849 and serves as a Christmas parable. A father, his pregnant wife, and their young daughter get lost in a blizzard somewhere in the Sierra Nevadas on their way to a new life in California. Freezing and hungry, they abandon their covered wagon and set out on foot for help. Guided by the song of a meadowlark, they find themselves at the fort of Captain John Sutters on Christmas Eve, where a horde of greedy, drunken goldminers enjoy a none-too-spiritual celebration. The miners quickly turn on the family, assuming that they are "claim jumpers," here for easy gold themselves. Captain Sutter nobly tries to protect the family from the ugly crowd. As the woman goes into labor, and the fort grows ever more hostile, he offers his barn as a refuge, since -- just as in times of old -- there appears to be "no room at the inn." Includes commercials and promos.
("Hallmark Hall of Fame" aired on NBC from 1952 to 1978; network affiliation varies after 1978.)
(Beginning with the live telecast of the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on December 24, 1951, Hallmark has sponsored a series of dramatic specials which since 1952 have been titled "Hallmark Hall of Fame." From 1952 to 1955 Hallmark also presented "Hallmark Hall of Fame," a weekly half-hour dramatic anthology series hosted by Sarah Churchill. The first program, "Dr. Serocold," was televised in January 1952 under the title "Hallmark Television Theatre." This series also ran under the title "Hallmark Summer Theatre" in July and August 1952.)
