WONDER YEARS, THE: INDEPENDENCE DAY {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The last in this series about Kevin Arnold, a young boy growing up in the suburbs during the late 1960s, whose experiences, thoughts, and reactions are recalled by the adult Kevin, who narrates and makes wry observations throughout. In this episode, set in the summer of 1973, Kevin is miserable working in his father's furniture factory. His friends are planning on driving across country and his best friend, Paul, is going to be busy with advanced summer school courses. Kevin stands up to his father for the first time and quits the factory. He leaves home in order to "find himself" and drives up to the resort where Winnie is working. He gets a job as a bus boy at the resort in order to be near Winnie, but never has the chance to spend much time with her. When he does, she seems uncomfortable around him. One night after playing poker, Kevin walks to the lake and sees Winnie kissing another guy. Later, Kevin tells Winnie what he saw, quits his job and heads home without his car, which he lost in a poker game. He decides to hitchhike and gets a ride in a car which, coincidentally, Winnie is already riding in. Unhappy with each other, they fight, which annoys the drivers, who throw them out. Without a ride home in a rainstorm, they find shelter in a barn and talk about their future together, coming to the painful realization that their relationship probably won't last. The series ends with a nostalgic look ahead at what happens to Paul, Winnie, and the Arnolds. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
