MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: GOING FOR THE GOLD: COVERING THE WINTER OLYMPICS {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. This seminar, moderated by the Museum television curator David Bushman, features a panel of on-air, production, technical and executive personnel from CBS Sports, who discuss the network's upcoming coverage of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

Guests include Neal Pilson, president of CBS Sports; Rick Gentile, senior vice president for production, CBS Sports; Greg Gumbel, the host of CBS's primetime Olympic broadcasts; Andrea Joyce, co-host for the weekend daytime broadcasts; Bob Matina, coordinating director for CBS Sports' Olympic coverage and director of the primetime broadcasts; and Michael Pearl, coordinating producer of CBS Sports' Olympic coverage.

Highlights include the following: Greg Gumbel admits to feeling disinterest in the Olympics prior to his work in Albertville, France in 1992; Gentile comments on the Norwegians' surprise at the American fascination with figure skating, and his belief that CBS's coverage of the sport has fostered its popularity in the U.S.; Pearl explains the basic elements of Olympic television coverage; Pilson acknowledges that CBS treats the Olympics like an entertainment event rather than a sports event; Joyce relates some of the small personal moments that she feels captures the spirit of the Games; Matina reveals some of the technological innovations the network is planning to use in its coverage, including the "CBS goalie cam"; Gentile comments about how the TNT cable network's daytime coverage will affect CBS primetime coverage; and Pilson and Gentile speak about the impact that the International Olympic Committee and the European-based winter sports federations have on American television coverage of the Games, and the preparation already taking place at CBS for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Also included are as-yet-unseen promotional spots for the 1994 Olympics, video footage of the Norwegian people, excerpts from profile pieces on some of the athletes (including an extended spot on American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan and her mother, Brenda) and a musical montage of great moments from the 1992 Olympics in Albertville.
