PLAYHOUSE 90: THE LAST TYCOON (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. In this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished last novel, Jack Palance portrays Monroe Stahr, head of a major Hollywood movie studio, a man haunted by the memory of his dead wife and battling his own terminal illness. The dynamic creator is caught off-guard when he meets Kathleen Moore, a beautiful woman who greatly resembles his late wife, and who happens to be engaged to a studio executive sent from the New York head office to evaluate Stahr's work. The New York office wants to know why Stahr has ordered reshooting on his latest picture, when it is already over budget. In additional complications, young Cecilia Brady, daughter of Stahr's assistant, has fallen in love with him; Stahr attempts to salvage the life and career of his friend Nick, an alcoholic, suicidal director; and someone tries to destroy Stahr's credibility by circulating an audience reaction tally from a preview of the new film -- a highly favorable reaction that seems to negate any need for reshooting.
