PLAYHOUSE 90: THE NINTH DAY (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. In this production, a community of eight people live together on a fertile mountain ridge high above a vast wasteland, believing themselves to be the only survivors of a nuclear apocalypse that occurred seventeen years earlier. The community pins its hopes for the continuation of the species on teenagers David and Ruth, who have been raised from infancy as though they were brother and sister. At first David, who idolizes Christopher Columbus and dreams of exploring the forbidden world below them, bristles when it is suggested that he marry the headstrong Ruth. The two ultimately get married as a matter of obligation, but are surprised to find their "sibling" antagonism melt into feelings of love, respect, and mutual responsibilty. Ruth encourages David to journey to the world below, knowing it is what he yearns to do, though they both know that he may never return and they may never have a child. Commercials deleted.
