SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {JOE PESCI, THE SPIN DOCTORS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Joe Pesci hosts this program with musical guest The Spin Doctors. The opening features a mock 1992 presidential debate among Republican incumbent George Bush, Democratic challenger Gov. Bill Clinton, and independent candidate H. Ross Perot. Phil Hartman plays Clinton, with Dana Carvey portraying the other two candidates with the aid of video trickery. Pesci's monologue concerns the previous week's show, when Gaelic wailer Sinéad O'Connor tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II, exhorting viewers to "fight the real enemy." Pesci assures the audience that he would have smacked her had he hosted that show. Sketches include: two commercial parodies for the fictional law firm of Green & Fazio, which specializes in fradulent law suits; the "Bensonhurst Dating Game" in which Chris Rock plays the lone African-American bachelor on an otherwise Italian-American-dominated show; Pesci portrays a man shopping for a pinky ring; "Weekend Update" with Kevin Nealon features an editorial by Adam Sandler as his braying Cajun Man character; "It's Pat" has Julia Sweeney playing the androgynous Pat, pursued by an obsessive roommate in a parody of the film "Single White Female" called "Single White Person"; Pesci and Schneider play two creeps who sit on a stoop and insult passerby; Pesci, Sandler and Nealon play three bank robbers who waste precious getaway time by trying to find their story on a series of uninformative television news broadcasts; and Ellen Cleghorne plays an aggressive NBC security guard who accosts Pesci backstage, until actor Robert DeNiro and director Martin Scorsese pay the set a surprise visit. The Spin Doctors perform "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and "Jimmy Olsen's Blues." Includes commercials and promos.
