MYSTERY!: POIROT, SERIES 2: THE CORNISH MYSTERY (TV)

Summary

One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces this series of Agatha Christie mysteries featuring Belgian dandy and private detective, Hercule Poirot. In this episode, Poirot is approached by a client named Mrs. Pengelley, who believes that her husband is slowly poisoning her so that he can marry his beautiful, young secretary. By the time Poirot and his assistant, Captain Hastings, travel to Mrs. Pengelley's home in Cornwall to investigate, she is already dead. Her physician, Dr. Alan, maintains that she suffered from gastritis, not poisoning, but rumors are flying around the small Cornish town that Dr. Pengelley is guilty of murder. Poirot realizes that the story is more complicated than it appears when he questions the doctor, the Pengelleys' niece, and her fiance. But he temporarily retreats to his offices in London, confident that the truth will emerge. Poirot and Hastings are not surprised when they find out that Mrs. Pengelley's body is being exhumed and her case reopened. However, Poirot is not convinced that Dr. Pengelley is the murderer, although he has been arrested and charged with murder. So the two investigators return to Cornwall to learn the truth and save a man from hanging. Although he has no evidence, Poirot identifies the murderer and must find proof in time to stop Dr. Pengelley's murder trial.
