YVES MONTAND ON BROADWAY (TV)

Summary

This musical special features debonair French entertainer Yves Montand in an evening of songs from Broadway musicals, with guest performers Polly Bergen, John Raitt, Bobby Van, and Helen Gallagher. As the program begins, the tuxedo-clad Montand sings and dances to "Just in Time," adding that he never knew that many songs he heard on the radio, and now performs on Broadway, originated from Broadway musicals. Highlights include the following: Montand is joined by Bergen, who sings "I'm in Love With a Wonderful Guy" as Raitt sings "Falling in Love With Love" and Gallagher joins in with "Lover"; Van, Raitt, and Montand sing "Let's Buddies" and "Friendship"; Gallagher and Van perform "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better" and "Everything I've Got Belongs to You" as the loose-limbed Van dances; Raitt sings "Little Girl Blue"; Bergen sings songs of love and lament, including "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man"; Montand sings "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face"; Van and Raitt sing a medley of songs with women's names, and Van and Montand's perform a soft-shoe rendition of "Once in Love With Amy"; Bergen, Montand, Gallagher, and Van sing "Take Me Along"; and Raitt sings "You'll Never Walk Alone."

In a segment with songs from Hollywood musicals, Bergen and Montand sing "They Can't Take Away from Me," Van and Gallagher dance to "Isn't It a Lovely Day," Van sings "A Cuban Love Song" and dances a tango with Gallagher, and they sing and tap dance to "Don't Give Up the Ship." Other highlights include: Polly Bergen performs "I Love Paris"; Montand and Bergen sing a medley of songs about Paris, including "C'est Magnifique" and a dual-language rendition of "Autumn Leaves" and "C'est Si Bon"; Montand introduces a medley of folk songs and sings "I Gave My Love a Cherry"; Raitt performs "I Wish I Was Single Again"; Montand sings "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child"; Bergen performs "I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again"; Raitt sings "Wayfaring Stranger"; Gallagher and Van perform "Old Man Tucker"; Raitt, Montand and Bergen sing "Skip to My Lou"; Bergen performs "Camptown Races"; and Raitt sings "Buffalo Gals -- Dance By the Light of the Moon," leading to a square dance, followed by the men's rendition of "Viva la Compagnie."

Finally, Raitt introduces a sample from Montand's current one-man Broadway show, "An Evening with Yves Montand." In his trademark dark outfit, Montand sings "Menage a Moi," "Planter Cafe" with his face shadowed by a large hat, and "Tu me fais tourner la tete" ("You Turn My Head"). Montand concludes the special by thanking the audience and cast, expressing pleasure with the chance to sing French and American songs, and by praising the vitality and optimism of American music. The cast then joins him in "Tu me fais tourner la tete" Includes commercials. Commercials include John Cameron Swayze and Julia Meade for Timex watches.
