MYSTERY!: INSPECTOR MORSE, SERIES 5: MASONIC MYSTERIES, PT. 1 (TV)
Summary
One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces this program, centered around the life of an ale-drinking British police inspector named Morse, who finds that his love of music often leads him to a murder investigation. In part one of this two-part episode, Morse is taking part in a production of "The Magic Flute" when he falls for a beautiful woman named Beryl. Unfortunately for him, Beryl has recently been divorced and is not ready for a new relationship. Even more tragically, soon after Beryl expresses her feelings, she is murdered. Morse finds that he is the number one suspect in the crime. To make matters even worse, Inspector Bottomley, for whom Morse feels great disdain, is put in charge of the case. Luckily, Morse's right-hand man, Lewis, is made Bottomley's assistant, which enables Morse to keep tabs on the investigation. All of the evidence points to Morse, who realizes that someone is framing him. Needing advice, he turns to a good friend and ex-police investigator named McNutt. Lewis accompanies him and the three of them discuss the case until McNutt, who has become a clergyman, has to leave to help a destitute person seeking refuge. Morse and Lewis return to Morse's car and find it vandalized with satanic symbols. Morse feels that he is being put through a series of ritualistic tests like the freemasons and the characters in "The Magic Flute." He believes that the twisted genius behind the crimes may be a con man he sent to jail named Hugo De Vries, but De Vries's former lover, Marion, insists that he is dead. Before he can finish his investigation, Morse is placed in jail by Bottomley, who believes that he has found enough evidence at Beryl's residence and in Morse's personnel files to prove the chief investigator is guilty. Later, when Lewis and Bottomley search Morse's apartment they discover something even more incriminating -- another dead body. Continues with T:30094.
