MYSTERY!: POIROT, SERIES 2: THE VEILED LADY (TV)

Summary

One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces this series of Agatha Christie mysteries featuring Belgian dandy and private detective, Hercule Poirot. This episode begins as a man robs a jewelry store in broad daylight with the help of several disguised conspirators. Later that day, a mysterious, veiled woman who calls herself Lady Millicent asks Poirot for help: she worries that her imminent marriage to a duke will be ruined by Mr. Lavington, who is blackmailing her with a love letter she wrote years ago. Poirot and Hastings try to reason with Lavington, but he is determined to show the letter to the duke unless Lady Millicent pays him in full. The private investigators decide to unlawfully sneak into Lavington's house and steal the letter while he is out of town. Once Poirot disguises himself as a locksmith to gain access to the house, he and Hastings search for the letter, which is stored in a Chinese puzzle box and hidden in a secret location. Although Poirot has a brief run-in with the law, he manages to retrieve and open the puzzle box. But before giving the box to Lady Millicent, he learns a disturbing piece of news about Lavington that adds an entirely new slant on the case. He soon realizes that the case of Lady Millicent's blackmail is connected to the jewelry store robbery in a way he had not anticipated. Poirot, Hastings, and Chief Inspector Japp cooperate in order to get to the bottom of a very clever criminal plot.
