ARSENIO HALL SHOW, THE {MAGIC JOHNSON DISCUSSES AIDS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of syndicated, late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Arsenio Hall. In this program, Hall interviews former Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson on the day after his retirement as a result of testing positive for the HIV virus. After receiving an ovation that is several minutes long, Johnson discusses the ramifications of having contracted the HIV virus. He encourages everyone to practice safe sex by using condoms, stressing that the Black community must become more informed, and he refutes the notion that the HIV virus and AIDS afflict only those who are gay. The athlete discusses breaking the news to his wife, Cookie Johnson, and stresses that she has tested negative for the virus. He also discusses his ambitions to own a basketball team and the role he may play on the 1992 Olympic basketball team.
In the next segment, Hall brings on comedians Roseanne and Tom Arnold of the television sitcom "Roseanne." Roseanne discusses her recent revelations about having survived incest as a child, and she comments on the prevalence of this type of crime and her family's denial of the charge. As Hall shifts the conversation to career concerns, the Arnolds condemn critics who they feel have been unjust in their appraisal of Tom. Included is a clip from their upcoming ABC television movie, "Backfield in Motion." Barry White performs the title song of his new album, "Put Me in Your Mix," and talks with Hall about the future of the planet. After Hall talks with singer Isaac Hayes as well, the two baritones perform a duet entitled "Dark and Lovely," also from White's new album. Includes commercials.
