Summary
Part one of two. One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces this program about a crotchety, middle-aged, ale-drinking British police inspector. In part one, Inspector Morse is dancing with a female colleague when he learns that Michael Gifford, a successful, divorced architect, has been found strangled in his car in a parking garage. While searching Gifford's house for clues, Morse's right-hand man, Detective Sergeant Lewis, finds evidence of a break-in, but the detective is bludgeoned by the intruder. As their investigation unfolds, Morse and Lewis interview the following people: Gifford's jealous associate, Brian Pierce, who was ice skating nearby when the murder occurred; Gifford's secretary, Janice, a former lover who complained about his constant abuse and ridicule; Edward Manley, an insurance executive; the thief who found Gifford's body after breaking into his car; and Camilla, a high-class prostitute who received threatening letters and tapes from Gifford after rejecting him. Rosemary Henderson, an insurance worker in Manley's office, also received similar missives from Gifford. Unanswered questions abound, and the detectives wonder how Pierce collected valuable paintings on a modest salary, why Gifford had Manley's phone number but had no policy with his company, and why the date of Gifford's death was circled in his diary, with Camilla's name noted.
