MYSTERY!: CAMPION, SERIES 2: SWEET DANGER (TV)

Summary

One in this mystery anthology series. This two-hour program features mystery novelist Margery Allingham's sarcastic blueblood detective, Albert Campion, who is assisted by his very own observant "Dr. Watson," Magersfontein Lugg. In "Sweet Danger," Campion enlists the assistance of two friends, Eager-Wright and Gully, to help prove that a small country named Alverna belongs to England, specifically to a poverty-stricken family, who live in the country. In order to prove whom the land belongs to, Campion must first uncover the crown of the country, the receipt of payment for the land, and the deed to the land before his enemy, Savanake, does. Savanake, a millionaire, wishes to purchase the land for himself from the people of Alverna, and, therefore, intends to destroy any evidence that proves that Alverna belongs to any family in England. Campion, Eager-Wright, and Gully arrive at the home of the Fittins, the family that Campion believes is the rightful heir to Alverna, where Amanda Fittin, a beautiful young lady, shows Campion a riddle inscribed on a large tree trunk. The strange inscription leaves clues as to where the three pieces of evidence may be found. While Campion attempts to decipher the riddle, the following events occur: Campion and his friends see a strange symbol drawn on sign posts of the town where the Fittins live; the local doctor tells the trio of a strange skin disease that only attacks strangers to the town; Campion goes to see Savanake, who sends Campion to Peru; Amanda is grabbed by a mysterious person in a black cloak and later reappears with a great deal of money to spend; and Campion manages to decipher the riddle, but finds that, in the end, he must fight Savanake face to face in order to keep the proof of the Fittins' rightful ownership of Alverna. In addition, Campion becomes smitten by young Amanda and tells her that he will return for her in a few years. After the program, Diana Rigg explains that, in a later book, Campion does return for the beautiful young lady and marries her. In addition, mystery writer Julian Symons talks about the golden age of crime, the creation of Albert Campion, the pairing of Campion and Lugg, and author Margery Allingham. Afterwards, scenes from the next episode of "Campion" are shown.
