ROCK THE VOTE (TV)

Summary

This star-studded special blends comedy, music, and celebrity testimonials in an effort to encourage Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine to vote in the upcoming elections. Using statistics from the first annual MTV/Rock the Vote youth survey, the program attacks apathy and gives viewers reason to believe that their votes matter. The program opens with a rap about voting by Queen Latifah. Other highlights include the following: filmmaker Spike Lee recounts the historical struggle to win the right to vote for African-Americans; actresses Rebecca DeMornay and Laura Dern remind female viewers of the suffragette movement and its fight to win the franchise for women; in a comedy sketch about a disillusioned voter, filmmaker Michael Moore goes around asking offbeat "authorities" (like the President of the Cookie and Biscuits Association) whom they're voting for and why; and throughout the program comedian Robin Williams offers humorous definitions of political terms. Also spread throughout the program is a short film, "The Promise of Steve Wilkens," which tracks the campaign of a young lawyer who challenges a well-established politician for city council and loses by only 200 votes. In addition, the program includes clips of musical performances by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and U2, and a video montage set to R.E.M.'s "Drive."
