NBC'S SATURDAY NIGHT {SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE} {SISSY SPACEK, RICHARD BASKIN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. The show opens with Dan Aykroyd, the rest of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, and host Sissy Spacek trying to stall for time because director Dave Wilson has supposedly died in the control room. During the opening monologue, Spacek, who has recently been nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in "Carrie," displays her baton-twirling expertise. Sketch highlights include the following: a commercial parody for Burger Master, a restaurant chain that will serve your burger any way you desire, regardless of how disgusting your preference; an "Ask President Carter" sketch with Bill Murray as Walter Cronkite and Dan Aykroyd as President Jimmy Carter, who takes unscreened listener phone calls from Americans, including a man on a bad acid trip; a sketch about Amy Carter's nanny, a former convict who tells her questionable bedtime stories; a segment called "How Your Children Grow" in which Jane Curtin interviews a man capable of speaking only the same five words in repetition; John Belushi's announcement that he plans to retire from show business to pursue his dream of competing in the Olympic Decathlon; "Weekend Update," with commentary by Garrett Morris as boxer Muhammad Ali and Gilda Radner's hearing-impaired correspondent Emily Litella with a philippic about "endangered feces"; Al Franken and Tom Davis with a newscast on the eve of World War III; Spacek, Radner, and Newman as women who are uncontrollably cute, victims of "Gidget's Disease"; Spacek and Belushi as a young married couple having relationship problems; a short film by Gary Weis in which Spacek twirls a baton in slow-motion to the strains of David Bowie's "Fame"; "Bad Playhouse," featuring a performance of "The Millkeeper"; and a brief film by Robert Altman presenting a montage of scenes of Spacek in different guises. Musical guest Richard Baskin performs two songs, including "One I Love You" with Spacek. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include John Huston and Cheryl Tiegs.
