BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, PART 5: A BLOW UPON A BRUISE (TV)

Summary

Part five in this eleven-part adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family, residents of the Brideshead estate. In this episode, it is the winter of 1924 and Charles has been invited by Lady Marchmain to spend Christmas at Brideshead. By coincidence, he arrives on the the same train as Sebastian, who has just come back from a European trip with Mr. Samgrass. It soon becomes evident that Sebastian's trip has done nothing to help him with his drinking problem. He was supposed to be home days ago but got lost in London on another one of his alcoholic sprees. As a precaution, the family have decided to keep all the liquor locked up for the first night. When Sebastian decides that he wants to join in the fox hunt the next day, the family are thrilled, but he later tells Charles that he plans to escape to the pub all day. The next morning, despite Sebastian's own pleas to the contrary, Charles gives in when his friend asks him for money. Sebastian has to be collected from the pub after the hunt. Later that evening, Rex arrives and brings Julia a strange Christmas gift. The following morning, Charles packs his bags to return to Paris, and Sebastian makes no effort to stop him. Before Charles leaves, Lady Marchmain asks him if he gave Sebastian the money. Untouched by Lady Marchmain's ensuing speech, Charles leaves Brideshead for what he is convinced is the last time.
