BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, PART 3: THE BLEAK LIGHT OF DAY (TV)
Summary
Part three in this eleven-part adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family, residents of the Brideshead estate. In this episode, Charles and Sebastian return to Oxford for the start of their second year. Mr. Samgrass, an Oxford don and friend of Sebastian's mother, begins meeting with Sebastian to encourage him to perform better at university in the upcoming term. Lady Marchmain, Sebastian's mother, comes to visit and meets Charles for the first time, expressing concern that he is her son's only friend. Sebastian's sister Julia pays a visit as well and invites the two young men to a charity ball she's organizing in London. Sebastian and Charles go but are arrested for drunk driving. As punishment, the authorities at Oxford order them to remain in their rooms at night, but they sneak out to meet each other, haunted all the while by a furtive Mr. Samgrass. Charles joins the family at Brideshead and grows concerned about Sebastian's chronic sadness and reliance on drink. Lady Marchmain takes a liking to Charles, and as their talks become more regular Charles increasingly becomes a part of the very family that Sebastian despises. Charles observes that Sebastian is praying out of desperation, worries about Lady Marchmain's overprotectiveness toward him, and foreshadows a series of disasters that will put Sebastian in even deeper trouble.
