MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD: MISTER ROGERS TALKS ABOUT MUSIC {YO-YO MA} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of programs for young children, hosted by Fred Rogers, which uses puppets and music to teach patience and cooperation, while providing guidance to help children cope with feelings and frustrations. In this episode, Mr. Rogers visits with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. First, Mr. Rogers looks at pictures of violins, violas, cellos, and bass violins, and then shows a film about the way bass violins are made. Then he takes a trip to Joe Negri's music shop, where he talks with Ma. The cellist discusses several topics, including his youth as a musician; ways that he expresses various feelings through music; and how he takes care of his Stradivarius cello. Ma performs music by Johann Sebastian Bach, and then a song entitled, "Tree, Tree, Tree," with Joe Negri accompanying him on the guitar. Additionally, Mr. Rogers imagines the latest developments in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, where hand-puppet characters interact with humans in the mythical kingdom of King Friday XIII. Lady Aberlin experiences frustration as she tries to learn how to play the bass violin, until she decides she would prefer to dance with the bass violin rather than play music on it.
