MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD: MR. ROGERS GOES TO SCHOOL {DAY 3} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of programs for young children, hosted by Fred Rogers, which uses puppets and music to teach patience and cooperation, while providing guidance to help children cope with feelings and frustrations. This episode is one in an ongoing series subtitled "Mr. Rogers Goes to School," in which the host aims to render young children more comfortable in their forays into formal education. Mister Rogers begins with his signature song, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Rogers then receives a special delivery in the form of an invitation for a free music lesson at Negri's Music Shop; he may choose whichever instrument he wants, he learns. Mr. Rogers decides that he would like to learn to play the drums. He is given a lengthy lesson from a man named Bobby, and Mr. Rogers encourages the children watching at home to join him in practice by banging their fingers against "a tabletop or a box." After Mr. Rogers's first lesson, all of the musicians in the shop begin to jam on a traditional Dixieland number; even Mr. McFeely, the mailman, joins in on his typewriter. After Mr. Rogers returns home, he invites everyone to visit the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. In the puppet world, Lady Aberlin is attempting to convince Daniel Tiger that he has nothing to fear when he starts school. It seems that Tiger's aunt, Lady Elaine, has warned the boy that he has to know everything about letters and numbers before he even sets foot in the school. Lady Aberlin rebuts Elaine's assertions, and Elaine demonstrates her secret vitriolic puppet dark side with an outburst at Lady Aberlin. "I don't understand your pedagogy!" she shouts. This program is closed-captioned.
