M*A*S*H {MASH}: LIFE TIME (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the men and women of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H), stationed behind the lines during the Korean War. In this episode, the medical personnel of the 4077th must race the clock in order to save the life of a G. I. with a badly lacerated aorta. A ticking clock appears in the corner of the screen throughout the entire program, measuring their efforts in "real time." Hawkeye initially stems the patient's bleeding by using his hand to press the soldier's aorta against the spinal column. While the bleeding ceases, this procedure grants the medical team no more than twenty minutes to complete an arterial graft without risking permanent paralysis. Several obstacles complicate the life-saving operation: shortages of blood and ice; misplaced clamps; and the absence of a suitable aorta to graft. While Hawkeye prepares the patient for the delicate surgery, B.J. waits for a mortally wounded G.I. to die so that his aorta can be used to save the other soldier. Commercials deleted.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Alan Alda.
