MARY'S INCREDIBLE DREAM (TV)
Summary
A music/variety special featuring Mary Tyler Moore in a musical story featuring dream sequences about the creation, fall from grace, and rebirth of humanity. The show opens with the Manhattan Transfer welcoming Moore at heaven's gates, where she performs a lavish thirties-style production number of "Hallelujah!" followed by Arthur Fiedler and the Los Angeles Master Chorale singing "Hallelujah Chorus." Satan, played by Ben Vereen, and his cohorts are cast out of heaven and sing a rendition of "On Your Toes" to celebrate their new freedom. Moore and Doug Kershaw identify themselves as Adam and Eve by singing "I'm a Woman" and "I'm a Natural Man." The Manhattan Transfer then performs "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," and Vereen sings "Let's Misbehave" as he and Moore perform a dance number and eat the forbidden fruit. Upset by her fall from grace, Moore sings and dances to "Nobody Does It Like Me," Vereen sings "Let the Good Times Roll," and an orgy scene ensues with Moore singing "Runnin' Wild." While the party rages on, the Manhattan Transfer performs "Java Jive," and Moore, in her bewilderment over these events, sings "Alfie." A flood destroys everyone except for Vereen, Moore, and the Manhattan Transfer. Shipwrecked on a rocky coast, Moore sings "Morning Has Broken," and she and Vereen dance to a rendition of the song. War breaks out and the Manhattan Transfer sings "Life Could Be a Dream," accompanied by footage of U.S. foreign relations negotiations with Richard M. Nixon and Henry Kissinger in the background. When the war ends, Moore proclaims her strength by singing "I'm Still Here." Alan Paul of the Manhattan Transfer, as a devil, sings "Sympathy for the Devil" and perishes in flames. In celebration of the devil's demise and man's rebirth, the California Boys Choir sing "Hallelujah!" and Moore, as an angel, reprises "Morning Has Broken." Commercials deleted.
