SHALOM SESAME: THE LAND OF ISRAEL {RECHOV SUMSUM}

Summary

The first of ten episodes in this series of children's educational programming that merges the concepts and characters of Sesame Street with the language and culture of Israel. This program is an edited version of the original. Itzhak Perlman begins the episode explaining that the Hebrew words "rechov" and "sumsum" mean "street" and "sesame" in English. He also introduces the puppet named Kippi Kipod, a porcupine. Next, Bonnie Franklin meets Miki, a woman who lives on Rechov Sumsum, and the resident puppet grouch, named Moishe Oofnik. The following segment features a song about Metulla, a city on the Northern coast of Israel. Next, Ernie and Bert discuss the problems of eating cookies in bed. Perlman than reminisces about his childhood in the city of Tel Aviv. Animated animals say "shalom," and Hebrew characters illustrate the spelling of the word. A segment features an Arab boy who lives in the village of Tamara in Israel. An animated segment demonstrates the Hebrew alphabet, called the alefbet. Ernie sings the "Rubber Ducky Song" in Hebrew. Franklin then hosts a segment about the city of Jerusalem, and she and children talk about the letter alef. Next, a song in Hebrew celebrates the city of Haifa, and a claymation segment features the Hebrew word for "wet paint." Soon, a boy goes on a field trip with his mother and brother to a historic mountain fortress, and an animated train showcases the number two. Next, guest Mary Tyler Moore learns some words in Hebrew, and Israeli children sing a song in English about their day. In the following segment, which is animated, a child counts to ten while climbing the stairs. Finally, Perlman hosts a segment about the history of the city of Caesaria. This program is sponsored by the letter alef, the number two, and the words shalom and wet paint.
