YEAR IN THE LIFE, A: SPRINGTIME / AUTUMN {PART 2 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

Part two of three in this miniseries chronicling the lives and relationships of a middle-class family. Set in Seattle, the drama focuses on the Gardners -- patriarch Joe, a widower who owns of a plastics factory; and his four children: Jack, a rebellious drifter estranged from his father; Anne, an ex-hippie juggling two kids and a shaky marriage; Lindley, who is pregnant and happily married to Jim; and Sam, a college student engaged to Debbie. Part two begins in springtime, as Joe, still struggling to deal with the death of his wife Ruth, trains for a bicycle race. A graduation party is held for Sam and his fiancee Debbie, who holds elaborate notions of a festive wedding. Still attached to his previous flame, Sam agonizes over the pre-set pattern toward which his life seems dedicated and contemplates calling off his engagement to Debbie. The relationship between Anne and Glen, who are in the process of building their dream home, continues to be a roller-coaster ride, alternating between jealous brawls and passionate nights. Several months later, when Anne announces that she is pregnant, Glen pressures her into getting an abortion. Jim, a patent attorney, finds his client meetings interrupted by the voracious demands of Lindley, who is well along in her pregnancy. Drafted into the family business, easygoing Jack becomes frustrated over the high-pressure demands of the job. Commercials deleted.

This miniseries was later expanded into a series of the same name which aired on NBC from 1987-1988.
