SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR, THE {THE DOORS, THE COMMITTEE, GEORGE CARLIN} (TV)
Summary
One in this weekly series of comedy/variety shows, hosted by comedy-singing duo Tom and Dick Smothers, which features political satire, irreverent parodies of topical social issues, and musical performances. On this program, the brothers are joined by rock group The Doors, comedy troupe The Committee, comedian George Carlin, the Jimmy Joyce Singers, the Ron Poindexter Dancsters, and Nelson Riddle and his orchestra. Highlights include: Tom and Dick decide to "go electric" with their musical instruments during a performance of the traditional folk song, "Red River Valley"; the Doors -- fronted by the "Lizard King" Jim Morrison -- perform "Wild Child" and "Touch Me"; the comedy stylings of a clean-cut, conservatively-dressed George Carlin, who does a routine about American Indians; a short film called "An American Time Capsule," which is a staccato montage of photographs encapsulating the history of the United States; a performance by The Committee comedy troupe (whose members number Howard Hesseman and Peter Bonerz) with sketches that include a sinister, paranoid rendering of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," a park bench meeting between a fusty codger and a motorcycle gang member, a bus driver of questionable sobriety, and an automated department store Santa Claus; Dick hosts a "Minority Report" which questions representatives of different minority groups about their opinion of how the government spends their tax dollars (this sketch features appearances by Michael Constantine, Betty Walker, Mel Stuart and Kenneth Mars); a segment with the Smothers Brothers, Carlin, Howard Hesseman, and Bob Einstein called "Daily News" which decries American citizens gathering their news from television rather than newspapers, and lampoons the rift between the conservative and liberal factions of the Catholic Church. Includes commercials.
