60 MINUTES {"1968," SPIRO AGNEW, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS, OTTO SKORZENY} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. This edition, anchored by Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner, features a look back at the events of 1968, an interview with Spiro T. Agnew, a profile of the Smothers Brothers, and an interview with former S.S. lieutenant colonel Otto Skorzeny. The program opens with "1968," a film montage by Chuck Braverman of fast-moving film and still images of the people and events of the tumultuous past year, set to driving, rhythmic music. In the next segment, Mike Wallace visits Vice President-elect Spiro T. Agnew at the governor's mansion in Annapolis, Maryland. Agnew discusses the following topics, among others: how he might rectify his image problems in the media; his belief that frankness in politics leaves one vulnerable when statements are taken out of context; the transition from state to national politics; his period of depression after receiving critical press; whether he sees himself as an asset or a liability to Richard M. Nixon; and his efforts to study foreign policy. "The Smothers Brothers," presents a profile of Tommy and Dick Smothers at work on their controversial television comedy show, including the following: footage contrasting the personalities of the brothers -- presenting Tommy as the workaholic political "crusader" and Dick as more moderate and low-key in his involvement with the show; a look at a week of production on the series, featuring Tommy leading a writers' meeting; and footage of a rehearsal. In "The Most Dangerous Man in Europe," correspondent Robert Trout talks with former S.S. lieutenant colonel Otto Skorzeny, who discusses the following topics, among others: why Hitler chose him to head a dangerous 1943 mission to liberate fallen dictator Benito Mussolini from captivity in the Abruzzi mountains in Italy; his impressions of Hitler; how he carried out the successful rescue mission; Mussolini's arrival at Third Reich headquarters in Germnay; and whether he has regrets about his actions during the war. (These recollections are documented with newsreel and captured footage.) Includes commercials and a public service announcement. Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Marc Haas and Helen Hotze Haas Foundation.
