AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: HEARTLAND (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series. Based on Elinore Stewart's diaries, "Letters of a Woman Homesteader," this film concerns a widow, Elinore Randall, who begins working as a housekeeper on a Wyoming ranch in the year 1910. Randall is prepared to work hard to repay her dour employer, Clyde Stewart, for her travel expenses to Wyoming, but she is also determined to become her own boss and she eventually buys the land adjacent to Stewart's. Unprepared for the difficulties of living on her own, Randall asks Stewart for his help, but he convinces her that living alone would be an impossible task and asks for her hand in marriage. The married couple struggle to survive their first winter but continue to persevere and help each other overcome hardships.
(This film received the First Place Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival; the Christopher Award in the category of Best Humanitarian; the Neil Simon Award for Best Screenplay; and First Place at the U.S. Film Festival.)
