TIMELINE: NOVEMBER 18, 1247 {THE MONGOL EMPIRE} (TV)

Summary

One in this six-part series that features news coverage of simulated historical events. This program examines the events of November 18, 1247, as the Mongolian warriors mobilize and advance toward the West. This military action marks the Mongolians' first decisive move since their tumultuous march across Middle and Far Eastern Europe six years earlier, which established Mongol dominance throughout the continent; leaders in Europe and Persia hasten to rally their forces in anticipation of another onslaught. Anchorman Steve Bell provides background and a brief history of events, including the Mongol Empire's weakness -- a power struggle between the heirs of Genghis Khan: Kuyuk Khan and Batu Khan. Correspondents provide background information and report on the events from various locations in Central Mongolia and Europe. Highlights include reports on the possibility of a crippling civil war within the Mongol Empire; Father John of Plano Carpini, the papal envoy to Mongolia, reporting on his discourse with the Mongol leader; a profile of the great Mongol warrior Genghis Khan; an examination of Mongol rule in Samarkand, Persia; and simulated footage of the bellicose Mongols in their camps and on the march. Includes a performance of an interview with Prince Kublai Khan, the future emperor of China. Includes a "commercial" for pepper.

Acquisition and cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
