RED HOT & BLUE: A TRIBUTE TO COLE PORTER TO BENEFIT
AIDS RESEARCH AND RELIEF (TV)
Summary
In this program, designed to promote awareness of the
AIDS crisis worldwide, various international music
groups perform their unique, updated versions of Cole
Porter's music in a series of music videos. The diverse
musical styles in the videos include rock and roll, rap,
jazz, and country. The music videos are interspersed
with "art breaks" that offer information about the HIV
virus; silent skits performed by Bill Irwin; interview
clips of various artists who perform in the videos
talking about their interest in this project, AIDS, and
safe sex; and special interview segments with John
Malkovich and Jean Paul Gaultier. Musical highlights
include "Don't Fence Me In," performed and directed by
David Byrne; "I've Got You Under My Skin" (Neneh
Cherry); "From This Moment On" (Jimmy Somerville);
"After You, Who?" (Jody Watley); an African version of
"Begin The Beguine" by Salif Keita featuring Les Ballets
Africans; "Too Darn Hot" (Erasure); "You Do Something to
Me" (Sinead O'Connor); "I Get a Kick" (The Jungle
Brothers); The Neville Brothers with "In the Still of
the Night," directed by Jonathan Demme; kd lang with "So
In Love;" "I Love Paris," performed in English by the
French group Les Negresses Vertes; "Do I Love You?"
(Aztec Camera); a hilarious version of "Well, Did You
Evah!" performed by Deborah Harry and Iggy Pop,
featuring newsreel clips of the gala premiere for the
film "High Society" with commentary by Michael
Fitzmaurice and a film clip of Frank Sinatra and Bing
Crosby performing the song; "Down in the Depths"
performed by Lisa Stansfield and directed by Philippe
Gautier; "Miss Otis Regrets"/"Just One of Those Things"
performed by the Pogues and featured singer Kirsty
MacColl, directed by Neil Jordan; "It's Alright with Me"
(Tom Waits); "Night and Day" (U2); and the touching
"Ev'rytime We Say Goodbye" (Annie Lennox). As the
credits role, Cole Porter's voice is heard singing
"You're the Top."
