Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Rob Reiner hosts this program, which features appearances by his wife, actress Penny Marshall, comedian Andy Kaufman, Jim Henson's Muppets, the dance troupe the Lockers (featuring Fred "Rerun" Berry), comedy team Mark Hampton and Denny Dillon, and a short film by Albert Brooks. Cast member Chevy Chase performs the cold opening as a wheelchair-bound man who has dropped his cigarette lighter. Highlights include the following: Reiner as a tacky lounge singer; John Belushi, Gilda Radner and Dan Aykroyd in a message for the National Pancreas Foundation; a skit about common fashion mistakes; Kaufman singing along with a recording of "Pop Goes the Weasel"; a parody commercial for "voodoo acupuncture"; a segment of "Dangerous But Inept" in which host Jane Curtin interviews a belligerent but bumbling Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme; a parody commercial for Felina Kitchens which shows unsuspecting supermarket shoppers sampling cat food; a Weekend Update segment with Chevy Chase, featuring Garrett Morris as the headmaster for the New York School of the Hard of Hearing; John Belushi as spasm-prone rocker Joe Cocker singing "With a Little Help from My Friends;" Chevy Chase for the "Drooler Anti-Defamation League"; a commercial for the Middle American Van Lines company -- which moves people rather than furniture; a segment called "What Gilda Ate" where the eponymous comedienne reveals her binging habits; and a sketch with Reiner and Marshall, which is invaded by the cast members in bee costumes. In Albert Brooks's short film, the comedian trades his punchlines for a scalpel as he indulges a childhood fantasy and performs open-heart surgery on an aged but game fan.
