MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: THE JIM HENSON LEGACY: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by the Museum of Television & Radio. In this seminar, members of Jim Henson's creative team share their memories of Henson and explore the history of the enterprise from the early days of the local TV series "Sam and Friends" to the international success of "Sesame Street," "The Muppet Show," and "Fraggle Rock." Moderated by Museum television curator Ron Simon, the seminar begins with several clips that showcase the range of Henson's work, including excerpts from "The Jimmy Dean Show,""The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Cube," "Sesame Street," the behind-the-scenes documentary "Of Muppets & Men," "The Muppet Show" with guest John Cleese, "Fraggle Rock," "Jim Henson's The Storyteller: The Soldier and Death," and "The Jim Henson Hour: The Song of the Cloud Forest." Simon introduces panelists Jane Henson, Frank Oz, Jon Stone, Jerry Nelson, and Michael K. Frith, and after a brief interview period invites audience members to ask questions. Among the topics covered are the early days with Henson, the evolution of puppetry techniques, and the growth of the organization; Henson's interest in music and his work with such composers as Joe Raposo, Jeff Moss, and Paul Williams; Oz's development of the characters Grover and Miss Piggy; the evolution of the character Floyd Pepper from design to performance, including a brief demonstration with the puppet by Nelson; the experimental, surrealist drama "The Cube" (1969); the contributions of Jerry Juhl and the talented team of writers that contributed to the success of the Muppets; and Henson's enduring legacy of creativity and camaraderie. Also included is a discussion of the Henson organization's latest series, "Dog City," followed by a brief clip.
