JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {EXCERPTS} {THE HONEYMOONERS: "LAWSUIT" / "WHAT'S THE NAME?"} (TV)

Summary

These excerpts from the comedy/variety series, "The Jackie Gleason Show," feature two early sketches of "The Honeymooners" that originally aired in 1954. This series of sketches concerns Ralph Kramden, a blustery bus driver, his long-suffering but understanding wife, Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. In the first sketch, "Lawsuit" (aired March 27, 1954), Ralph has spent seven weeks at home with a broken leg after an accident on his bus. He becomes convinced that he has an airtight case against the bus company and plans to sue them for $10,000. Despite the fact that Alice fears that he could lose the trial or perhaps his job, Ralph has Norton find him a lawyer. In the second sketch, "What's the Name?" (aired May 15, 1954), Ralph has trouble going to sleep when he and Alice forget the name of an actress that they saw in the movies that evening. Ralph and Alice argue about which star each wishes the other looked like, but when Alice cannot remember the name of the actress in the film they saw, Ralph becomes obsessed and cannot sleep until he can remember the name of the actress. Their argument draws the attention of Ed as well as a passing police officer. Ralph and Alice end the sketch by singing "One of These Days, Pow!" Commercials deleted.

(Series title varies; "The Jackie Gleason Show" from 1952-1961 and 1966-1970; "Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine" from 1962-1966. "The Honeymooners" spin-off replaced the variety series 1955-1956.)
