JIM HENSON'S "THE STORYTELLER": HANS MY HEDGEHOG (TV)

Summary

One in this series of folk tales and legends narrated by "the Storyteller," featuring fantasy characters from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. In this episode, the Storyteller weaves the tale of the bewitched Hans -- part hedgehog, part man -- and the princess whose devotion transforms him. Born of a poor farmer and his wife, young Hans is taunted by the neighbors and reviled by his father, and eventually leaves home. Years later, Hans offers his hospitality to a weary king who has lost his way, and helps him find the way back to his kingdom. In return for the favor, the king agrees to grant Hans the first thing that greets him upon his return to the kingdom. Overjoyed to see her father, the princess rushes to greet the wayward king. When Hans comes to claim his prize, the princess resignedly weds the creature, but is later amazed when the hedgehog spends two nights shedding his hairy coat of quills to become a handsome man. He tells her that if she keeps his secret for one more night, the enchantment will at long last be broken, but their happy future is jeopardized by the meddlesome queen, who tries to pry the secret from the loose-tongued princess.
